Tutorial: HCUP Fast Stats: Most Common Diagnoses for Inpatient Stays

  1. The table activity page automatically loads with the default table displaying the top 10 most common principal diagnoses for all inpatient stays in the current data year.
  2. Change one or more selections to see different results.
    • Year of data
    • Characteristic
      1. All inpatient stays
      2. Age (0-17 years, 18-44 years, 45-64 years, 65-74 years, and 75+ years)
      3. Sex
      4. Expected payer (Medicare, Medicaid, private insurance, and self-pay/no charge)
      5. Community-level income (from the lowest quartile 1 to the highest quartile 4)
    • Maternal/Neonatal stays included or excluded
  3. Click Refresh to request the new table after changing selections.
  4. Make a selection on the right side of the screen to conduct a side-by-side comparison.
    • Try viewing the same characteristic, but different data years.
    • Try viewing different characteristics using the same data year.
    • Try viewing the above comparisons and changing whether maternal/neonatal stays are included or excluded.
  5. Always click Refresh to get the results for your modified selections.
