The All Patient Refined DRGs (APR-DRGs) are assigned using software developed by 3M Health Information Systems. This severity measure includes the base APR-DRG, the severity of illness subclass, and the risk of mortality subclass within each base APR-DRG. The prefix "APRDRG" has been included in the data element names to distinguish APR-DRG measures from other HCUP data elements. For more information, please refer to the following documents:

The version of the APR-DRG software varies by data year, but the APR-DRG data elements are uniformly coded across States because they are assigned during HCUP processing.

  • For 2021 databases, the APR-DRG version is 39.0.
  • For 2020 databases, the APR-DRG version is 38.0.
  • For 2019 databases, the APR-DRG version is 37.0.
  • For 2018 databases, the APR-DRG version is 36.0.
  • For 2017 databases, the APR-DRG version is 35.0.
  • For 2016 databases, the APR-DRG version is 34.0.
  • For 2015 Quarter 4 (Oct - Dec) databases, the APR-DRG version is 34.0.
  • For 2015 Quarter 1-3 (Jan - Sept) databases, the APR-DRG version is 33.0.
  • For 2014 databases, the APR-DRG version is 32.0.
  • For 2013 databases, the APR-DRG version is 31.0.
  • For 2012 databases, the APR-DRG version is 30.0.
  • For 2011 databases, the APR-DRG version is 29.0.
  • For 2010 databases, the APR-DRG version is 28.0.
  • For 2009 databases, the APR-DRG version is 27.0.
  • For 2008 databases, the APR-DRG version is 26.1.
  • For 2007 databases, the APR-DRG version is 25.1.
  • For 2006 databases, the APR-DRG version is 24.
  • For 2003-2005 databases, the APR-DRG version is 20.0, release 1.
  • For 2002 databases, the APR-DRG version is 20.0, not release 1.
