Source Files
The HCUP Kentucky inpatient files were constructed from inpatient discharge files received from the Kentucky Cabinet for Health and Family Services, Department for Public Health.
Types of Facilities Included in the Files Provided to HCUP by the Partner
The Kentucky Cabinet for Health and Family Services, Department for Public Health, collects data from acute care, psychiatric, rehabilitation, and Veterans Administration hospitals in Kentucky. Kentucky excluded Veterans Administration hospitals from the supplied files. Discharges are not included from the following facility types: skilled nursing facility, intermediate care (long-term care), custodial/respite, and hospice.
A comparison of the number of hospitals included in the SID and the number of hospitals reported in the AHA Annual Survey is available starting in data year 2010.
Hospitals do not always report data for a full calendar year. Some hospitals open or close during the year; other hospitals have technical problems that prevent them from reporting data for all months in a year.
Inclusion of Stays in Special Units
Beginning October 1, 2017, acute physical rehabilitation cases discharged from Distinct Part Units of acute care hospitals have been separated from other discharges and reported under different DSHOSPID's. These DSHOSPID's take the form of DPRnnn, where nnn represents 3-digit numbers.
Prior to 2017, The documentation supplied by Kentucky did not include whether information on stays in special units (e.g., psychiatric, rehabilitation, long-term care) within the hospital were included in the data.
Exclusion of Records During HCUP Data Processing
Records with a discharge disposition of "still a patient" and "admitted as an inpatient to this hospital" were excluded from the HCUP Kentucky inpatient data.
