SID File Composition - Michigan

SID Notes

Source Files

The HCUP Michigan inpatient files were constructed from the Michigan Health and Hospital Association (MHA) inpatient stay files.

Types of Facilities Included in the Files Provided to HCUP by the Partner

Michigan supplied discharge abstract data for inpatient stays from general acute care and specialty hospitals (e.g., rehabilitation hospitals) that are a member of the Michigan Health and Hospital Association.

A comparison of the number of hospitals included in the SID and the number of hospitals reported in the AHA Annual Survey is available starting in data year 2010.

Hospitals do not always report data for a full calendar year. Some hospitals open or close during the year; other hospitals have technical problems that prevent them from reporting data for all months in a year.

Inclusion of Stays in Special Units

Discharges for acute psychiatric and rehabilitation patients are included in the Michigan file. Inpatient records for the following types of patients are not included: patients in swing beds, respite or long-term-care patients, skilled nursing home patients, stillbirths, hospice patients, and donor patients such as kidney donors.

Exclusion of Records During HCUP Data Processing

Three types of records were excluded from the HCUP Michigan inpatient data:

  • Records that were marked as replicated by the data source were excluded from the HCUP Michigan file. If the hospital was unable to submit data, MHA replicated the data, either from a previous year or the current year. MHA included a flag on the discharge records that indicated if the record was replicated.
  • Records from non-Michigan hospitals were deleted during HCUP data processing
  • Records with a discharge disposition of "still a patient" and "admitted as an inpatient" were excluded from the HCUP Michigan file.
