Bill type is retained as provided by the data source. We expect that the information is coded according to UB-92 regulations, but no edit checks are performed on this data element during HCUP processing. The first digit indicates type of facility, the second digit indicates bill classification, and the third digit indicates frequency. Maryland Beginning in 2007, Maryland included the records from all other outpatients, Greenbaum cancer center, and UMMS shock trauma in the unified AS and ED outpatient data file. The inclusion of these new records resulted in a large increase in the frequency of patients with BILLTYPE = 131, Hospital - Outpatient - Admit Through Discharge Claims. Beginning in 2006, Maryland provides BILLTYPE in SASD and SEDD files.
