HOSPITAL_OWNED indicates whether or not an ambulatory surgery center is a hospital-owned facility or not. This variable is based on information provided by the data source and information provided by the American Hospital Association (AHA). A facility is considered hospital-owned (HOSPITAL_OWNED = 1) if any one of the following is true:
- An AHA hospital identifier can be determined (i.e., the hospital is listed in the AHA Annual Survey of Hospitals).
- The facility provides inpatient data to the HCUP project, but no AHA hospital identifier can be determined.
- Documentation provided by the data source clearly indicates the facility is hospital-owned.
An AHA hospital identifier cannot always be determined for hospital-owned facilities because hospitals may not report to the AHA.
Prior to 2018, this data element is called FREESTANDING.
