INTENT_SELF_HARM identifies records for which at least one diagnosis (DXn) or External Cause of Injury Codes (ECODEn) indicates intended self harm. (ICD-9-CM codes E9500-E959 and V6284). The injury intent of self harm is consistent with the classification system used by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) and documented at http://www.cdc.gov/injury/wisqars/ecode_matrix.html, except for the inclusion of the diagnosis code V6284 for suicidal ideation. HCUP includes three data elements that identify the intent of the injury: unintentional, assault, and self-harm. HCUP also includes 11 data elements that identify the mechanism of the injury: cutting/piercing, drowning, falling, fire, firearm, machinery, motor vehicle traffic, natural/environmental, poisoning, suffocation, and being struck by or against. If multiple injuries are reported, more than one mechanism and intent may be identified.
