PL_UR_CAT4 is a four category urban-rural designation for the patient's county of residence.
- Starting in the 2014 HCUP databases, the categorization is a simplified adaptation of the 2013 version of the Urban Influence Codes (UIC).
- In the HCUP databases prior to 2014, the categorization is a simplified adaptation of the 2003 version of the Urban Influence Codes UIC.
The 12 categories of the UIC are combined into four broader categories that differentiate between large and small metropolitan, micropolitan, and a non-urban residual as follows:
