Iowa Beginning in 2014, Iowa provides five separate indicators for the type of outpatient service. Because a patient can receive more than one type of outpatient service, the five indicators were concatenated to create a five-character value for the HCUP data element OPService. Each character is either 0 for no outpatient service of that type or 1 indicating that patient received that type of service. See the table below for a description of each type of outpatient service. For example, the OPservice value of "10000" means the patient received care in the emergency room, but none of the other four types of outpatient services. The OPservice value of "10100" means the patient received both emergency and observation services.

Each character is either 0 for no outpatient service of that type or 1 indicating that patient received that type of service. See the table below for a description of each type of outpatient service. For example, the OPservice value of "1000" means the patient received care in the emergency room, but none of the other four types of outpatient services. For example, the OPservice value of "10000" means the patient received care in the emergency room, but none of the other four types of outpatient services. The OPservice value of "10100" means the patient received both emergency and observation services.
