General Notes |
If the HCUP Partner provides both a state-specific hospital identifier and the National Provider Identifier (NPI) for the facility, then the HCUP variable DSHOSPID contains the state-specific hospital identifier and the variable HOSP_NPI contains the NPI. If the HCUP Partner provides the NPI as their only hospital identifier, then the NPI is retained in DSHOSPID and not stored in HOSP_NPI. The state-specific hospital identifier is preferred for DSHOSPID because it is compatible with back years of HCUP data. |

State Specific Notes |
Kentucky HOSP_NPI includes the facility identifier used during data collection. It is usually NPI for the facility, but some facilities have been assigned a "pseudo" NPI. Nevada HOSP_NPI is not provided in the 2011 source files for Nevada. New York Beginning in 2017, New York provides the National Provider Identifier (NPI). New York does not limit this field to facility identifiers and may contain physicians and other licensed health care professionals. |
