General Notes |
The data element P7EDSRC_X helps identify admissions to the hospital that had emergency department (ED) services. Effective July 1, 2010, Uniform Billing standards (UB-04) discontinued the value indicating an ED admit from the data element for point of origin. Instead hospitals are to use the a condition code of "P7". The condition code values reported by the HCUP data source are retained as provided and documented under State-Specific Notes. The most reliable way to identify ED admissions in the HCUP databases is to use the data element HCUP_ED. This variable considers various pieces of information to identify if a patient had ED services. These include a revenue code in the range 450-459 indicating ED services, an positive ED charge, a CPT code indicating ED physician services, an admission source of ED, a point of origin of ED, or a P7 condition code. The coding of admission source, point of origin, and P7 condition code varies by state and, sometimes, even varies across hospitals in a state. The HCUP_ED variable considers all possible evidence of ED services. |

This includes any record with a HCPCS code of 99281-99285 or 99291 or with a revenue code 0450, 0451, 0452, 0456, 0459. This service marker was used to populate P7EDSRC_X.
