General Notes

Detailed charges are submitted charges that pertain to a specified revenue center or group of revenue centers. Beginning in 2006, charges associated with specific revenue centers stored in REVCDn are retained in REVCHGn. Charges specific to a group of revenue centers are stored in CHGn. Prior to 2006, both types of detailed charges were stored in the HCUP data element CHGn. Charges are retained as provided by the data source, including cents and negative values. Zero charges are retained as a zero and are NOT set to missing (.). Charges greater than $9,999,999 are set to invalid (.A). No edit checks are performed on this data element during HCUP processing.

State Specific Notes

Massachusetts The charge detail provided by Massachusetts varies across years. Starting in 2007: Detailed charges (REVCHGn) are associated with the UB-92 revenue centers (REVCDn), and units of service (UNITn). For example, REVCHG1 applies to the revenue center in REVCD1 and the units of service are specified in UNIT1. West Virginia The charges of one hospital (DSHOSPID=010057) were overestimated by 111% in the 2007 data. Beginning in 2006, detailed charge information was stored in REVCHGn field.
