Release of the 2016 National Inpatient Sample (August 2018)

Release Date: August 2018

The Healthcare Cost and Utilization Project (HCUP) National Inpatient Sample (NIS) featuring 2016 data is now available. The NIS is the largest publicly available all-payer inpatient healthcare database in the United States. The NIS is nationally representative of all short-term, non-Federal hospitals in the U.S. It is drawn from the HCUP State Inpatient Databases (SID) and includes more than 7 million hospital inpatient records from 46 States and the District of Columbia, covering more than 97 percent of the U.S. population. The NIS includes patients from all payer types, including Medicare, Medicaid, private insurance, and the uninsured.

The 2016 NIS is an annual, calendar year file with diagnosis and procedure codes reported using only the ICD-10-CM/PCS coding system. Therefore, the file structure of the 2016 NIS is similar to the file structure of the NIS in data years prior to 2015 with one exception, data elements derived from AHRQ software tools are not available in the 2016 NIS because the ICD-10-CM/PCS versions are still under development. For users interested in applying the AHRQ software tools to the ICD-10-CM/PCS data in the 2016 NIS, beta versions of the AHRQ software tools are available for download on the HCUP Tools & Software section of the HCUP User Support (HCUP-US) website.

The large size of the NIS enables analyses of infrequent conditions, uncommon treatments, and special patient populations. The NIS can be used by researchers and policymakers to identify, track, and analyze national trends in healthcare utilization, access, charges, quality, and outcomes.

As part of the HCUP database family, the NIS is considered by health services researchers to be one of the most reliable and affordable databases for studying important healthcare topics. The 2016 NIS can be purchased through the HCUP Central Distributor, and select statistics can be accessed via HCUPnet. Additional information is located on the NIS Overview Page.
