Release Date: November 30, 2022
The Healthcare Cost and Utilization Project (HCUP) 2020 Nationwide Readmissions Database (NRD) and Cost to Charge Ratio (CCR) Files (NRD CCR) are now available. The NRD is a unique and powerful database designed to support various types of analyses of national readmissions for all patients, regardless of the expected payer for the hospital stay. This database addresses a large gap in healthcare data — the lack of nationally representative information on hospital readmissions for all ages. The HCUP NRD CCR Files can be used to estimate the cost of resource use for inpatient stays based on the reported total charge and the cost-to-charge ratios provided in the supplemental files.
The NRD is constructed using records from the HCUP State Inpatient Databases (SID) with reliable, verified patient linkage numbers in the SID that could be used to track the patient across hospitals within a State, while adhering to strict privacy guidelines. Unweighted, the 2020 NRD contains data from approximately 17 million discharges. Weighted, it estimates roughly 32 million discharges.
The 2020 NRD and corresponding CCR files (NRD CCR) can be purchased through the HCUP Central Distributor. Additional information is located on the NRD Overview and the HCUP Cost-to-Charge Ratio (CCR) Files homepages.
